Diplomas are innovative new qualifications for 14- to 19-year-olds. They have been created to provide a real alternative to more traditional education and qualifications, and are the most important change to the country's education system since the introduction of GCSEs.
Diplomas have been developed by employers, schools, colleges and universities to help young people realise their potential and gain knowledge and skills in a real world environment. A Diploma is an all-round package that gives students the right knowledge, experience, insight and attitude to prepare them for the next stage of life, whether that is university, college or work.
Diplomas are being introduced in phases from 2008 to 2011. In total there will be 17 available lines of learning.
In 2013 a national entitlement will be introduced, which means that all learners aged 14-19 will have the choice of working towards a Diploma.
Further information on the components, levels and progression routes of the Diploma are available on the Diploma section of the QCDA website.
